Radiofrequency

Radiofrequency (RF) uses a high-frequency alternating electrical current to generate controlled heat within dermal and mucosal tissues. As the RF wave passes through the tissues, the tissues' natural electrical resistance produces endogenous heating without directly heating the skin surface.

How radiofrequency works

This controlled thermal effect (typically 40-45 degrees C) induces immediate collagen fiber contraction and stimulates fibroblasts to generate new collagen through activation of heat shock proteins. At a deeper level, the rise in temperature alters lipid fluidity and improves meibum viscosity, thereby facilitating gland expression.

In the eyelids, this stimulation also enhances tissue trophicity and eyelid dynamics. Energy delivery is targeted, with controlled three-dimensional penetration, thereby minimizing corneal risk.

In ophthalmic practice, RF is used primarily to warm and reactivate the Meibomian glands, in combination with IPL or other electrical current devices (ECDs). It is a non-invasive, well-tolerated procedure with increasing regenerative potential.

Current Status

Bipolar ophthalmic RF systems (e.g., Forma I, InMode) are currently under evaluation by WIDES to better define their optimal indications.
