Diagnostic Meibomian Gland Expression

Diagnostic meibomian gland expression assesses the functional status of the Meibomian glands by evaluating the quality, quantity, and expressibility of meibum under standardized pressure.

What gland expression assesses

Unlike meibography, which reveals anatomy, gland expression provides direct insight into gland performance.

It is essential for identifying obstructive MGD, estimating disease severity, predicting response to treatments such as IPL, QMR, and thermotherapy, and guiding personalized management.

Completing the Diagnostic Triad

Together, these complementary examinations provide a more complete, objective, and clinically relevant understanding of ocular surface disease, and make it possible to establish the eTAO score, an objective grading system for quantifying dry eye disease severity.
