Meibography is now a cornerstone of modern dry eye assessment. Using non-invasive infrared imaging, it provides detailed visualization of the Meibomian glands, allowing clinicians to detect gland dropout, distortion, shortening, and other structural abnormalities.
What meibography reveals
Particular attention should be paid to the upper eyelid, where gland damage is often more pronounced and may appear earlier than in the lower lid.
Upper lid meibography has become especially valuable for detecting early disease, refining severity grading, predicting therapeutic response, particularly to IPL, and improving preoperative screening in cataract and refractive surgery.
Clinical Significance
More than a simple imaging tool, meibography is essential for the diagnosis, stratification, and longitudinal monitoring of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).
